Theme Thursday - Statue

I like the idea of a theme day, but I was probably hoping for something simple like chocolate or coffee or something. Statue... hmmmm!

Well, I waited by one last night. Molly Malone, to be precise. I was meeting a friend before heading off to meet the DAGBO group. The more natural meeting point would have been the main gate in front of Trinity, as that was closer for both of us, but I don't think either of us really wanted that.

Why? Well, we avoided Trinity because it's a date pick-up place. I've been there a few times myself, but I don't think I've ever actually waited for anyone. Whomever I've been meeting would have waited for me. Yay! Anyway, imagine standing there for 10 minutes. Everyone passing will look at you, knowing you're most likely waiting for a date. They'll pass judgement. Wonder if you'll be stood up. Wonder if it's a first date, or second date maybe.

Wonder if there'll be a next. We avoided the wondering and met elsewhere.

So, I got there early, of course. Seven minutes early. I tried to look busy. Wrote a text or two. Avoided looking up. Little did it help...

"Would you mind taking our photo?"

I think it happened four times in the seven minutes I waited. One couple even asked me to re-take the photo after the initial attempt, which they obviously didn't approve of. I longed for non-digital cameras at this point. Surely it's unfortunate if a photo doesn't turn out the way you want, but you can't change the models! They didn't look that hot and the photo didn't either. Second attempt was no better, nor any worse.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is on the agenda tonight. You'll most likely hear more about it :-)

I thought she looked down-trodden and busty! Just read Wikipedia on Molly Malone- I think her beauty must be they way she galvanises communities- or football crowds...it is rather sad they way she is parodied.

Like the statue.

I see you got a lot of snow. That's what has been happening here in Connecticut,USA and it has been very cold as well.

@ Cinnamon - thanks for stopping by, I'll check out your blog tomorrow when I'm less sleepy. Just home from the theatre and it's just about time for bed.

@ Dakota Bear - also thanks to you for stopping by, I'll check out your blog also :-) I doubt Dublin snow compares to Connecticut snow. Unless Connecticut snow has changed since I lived there back in the mid 90s...

@ Mouse - welcome to you too - I'll have a lot of new blogs to check out tomorrow! Amazing what can happen while away in the theatre for a few hours :-) As for the Dublin girls, the Danish Dublin girls are of course the prettiest *grin*

@ Tut Tut - you should come back some day. A note here also to check out your blog in the morning and see where you're from.

@ Megan and Coffee Messiah - happy theme Thursday to you too!

Is a 'pick up place' like a beat? Or something less unsavoury?

It's a place where people pick up their dates - generally "first date" dates *lol*

Well, if I told this in person I'd probably hang my head a bit (but it's hard for me to type if I ain't lookin';-), but, although I've heard of Molly Malone, I really don't know why, who she was.
I do like the statue, enjoying as I do the natural, undecorated coloring of the(I'm assuming)bronze.
I can't help noticing, a bit of spillage seems immanent. Is that part of her story? (no, I don't mean the baskets on the cart!)

Funny about the picture taking passersby.

I like this post.

Molly is commemorated in a statue designed by Jeanne Rynhart, erected to celebrate the city's first millennium in 1987. Placed at the top of Grafton Street in Dublin, this statue is known colloquially as "The Tart With The Cart," "The Dish With The Fish," and "The Trollop With The Scallops." The statue portrays Molly as a busty young woman in seventeenth-century dress. Her low-cut dress and large breasts were justified on the grounds that as "women breastfed publicly in Molly's time, breasts were popped out all over the place."
